Challenges in Grid Stability: Managing 20,000 MW Peak Demand in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu grid achieved an unprecedented peak demand exceeding 20,500 MW this summer. This monumental milestone was successfully handled solely due to the vigilant shift engineers at SLDC and transmission substations across the state.

As we transition towards higher renewable penetration, the demand on pumped storage hydro (Kundah, Kadambarai) and fast-ramping thermal units has increased substantially. This article reviews the technical prerequisites for secondary frequency regulation.
